Our book of the month takes us to a tropical locale (much needed this time of year!) but paradise is lost. In stark contrast with the opulent resort that the main character Margot works at is the harsh reality of the side effects of colonialism. If you look past Jamaica's sun loungers and tropical drinks, the novel tells a story of the oppressive reality of racism, sexism and classicism.
Each character of Margot's family tries to rise above their lot - often forcing each's own hopes, fears and dreams onto the other. But Margot's ambitions out stride them all, and we watch as her goal to become the hotel's manager sucks her into a cycle of continuing exploitation.
Paradise it is not - which is why our cocktail of the month combines the island's tropical flavours with dark ingredients to make a tantalising tipple.
